Police discovered the first body a block from Newark Penn Station around 9 p.m. on reports of a fatal shooting, where they then were told of another deadly shooting on the 100 block of Haynes Avenue, according to initial reports.
The two incidents were believed to be related, according to a spokeswoman with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
The names of the victims were not released and it was not immediately clear if the suspect was in custody.
